How To
Knowing how to insulate French doors can help you stay comfortable, whatever the weather. It’s also a great way to minimize your energy bills.
With everything you need in one place, the customised ecoMaster French Door Draught Proofing Kit provides the ideal solution - effective and easy to fit yourself.
First let’s look at the different mechanisms of French Doors:
Before we explain the sequence of operation, it is useful to understand the anatomy of a French Door:
What you will need:
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Miter box
- Sharp-bladed hacksaw
- Pair of scissors
- No. 2 Phillips screwdriver
- Hammer
- Alcohol wipes/ cleaning spray and microfibre cloth
Follow this sequence for a trouble free job:
- Fit the Draught Dodgers to the perimeter. If your doors open inward, the Draught Dodgers go on the outside and if your doors open outwards they go on the inside.
- Treat the centre gap between the two doors.
- Treat the bottom of the doors.
Ensure you use the fitting packer when installing the Draught Dodgers for a perfect fit.
Thoroughly clean all surfaces to maximize bond strength of the components with your doors.
Fit the center seal to the inside edge of the inactive door. This keeps it out of the way and you can see it working.
"How To" Installation Videos:
Check out our French Door Installation DIY videos showing how to install a French Door Kit. Super easy to follow, it features detailed, step-by-step instructions from our Technical Director, Maurice Beinat.
Click here This video explains why you might want to cut the top Draught Dodger into two pieces, the importance of testing and cleaning before fitting components, how to fit the French door astragal seal and the French door bottom seal seals.

Delivery
Q: Can I collect my order?
A: Yes you can! A “Ready for Pickup” email will be sent to you when you order is ready to be collected. Please click this link for the Click and Collect details. Note: this Collection Centre is in Preston Victoria, NOT Prestons in NSW.
Q: When will my order be despatched?
A: Generally, your order will be despatched within 2 to 3 business days.
Q: Will my order be tracked?
A: Yes! When your order is consigned, you will receive a tracking number that will show you where your order is and its expected delivery date. Track your order here
Please note: Orders with two or more items may arrive in separate parcels with no additional shipping charge
Q: When will my order be delivered?
A: All over-sized orders are picked, packed and despatched within 3 business days. Your order will be delivered by a specialist courier that specifically handles oversized items that cannot be delivered via Australia Post.
Please note that this is a specialist courier NOT an express courier. Our experience with specialist couriers varies depending upon the delivery location. Clearly delivery times will fluctuate at peak shipping times such as Christmas, end of financial year and the pinnacle of winter bleakness!
Q: Authority to leave?
A: The standard courier delivery option is "Authorised to Leave". That means that if there is no one home when the courier arrives, your order will be left at your address. If this is not appropriate, please advise when you place your order for alternative arrangements to be made.
Q: What happens if my order is damaged in transit?
A: Our freighters have very strict policies on the ability to claim on insurance if your order arrives damaged. There is a 48 hour window of receipt of goods for ecoMaster being able to advise the freighters of a damage claim. PLEASE ensure you have advised us IMMEDIATELY if an order has been damaged on arrival. Open your order immediately and check. Outside of the 48 hour window, we are unable to make an insurance claim.
Q: What happens if my order gets lost during transit?
A: Occasionally we have had orders go missing. ecoMaster has solid procedures in place and photograph every order that leaves our warehouse. If a delivery date appears to be beyond expectation, we will raise a query on your behalf. If your order cannot be found during transit, we will send a replacement.
Q: What happens if my order is stolen after delivery?
A: If your order is stolen from your home after delivery, please raise a Police report.
Q: How do I make my freight costs cheaper?
A: We hear you! Oversized items are expensive to transport. Any item over 1.5m long carries an additional $10 charge by the courier.
Potential cost effective freight alternatives are:
- Share the costs of freight with a neighbour
- Buy all your long items (such as Draught Dodgers) in one order (a second tube going to the same address is free)
- Collect your order from Preston Victoria
If you live regionally or in a rural location, freight costs will be high. Do you have an address in a town where your order can be safely delivered? We also live regionally and understand the frustration with the high costs of freight!!
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between the Sill and Butt Kit?
A: The different kits are designed to cater for different door steps, see below.
Q: My doors don’t open and close properly. Can I still install the French Door Draught Proofing kit?
A: It is always best practice to ensure that your doors operate freely and that the latches and locks work correctly prior to installing draught proofing. Adding draught proofing components to doors that don’t work well will certainly not make them work better.
Q: The timber on my doors is badly weathered. Will this kit still work?
A: Generally yes, the draught proofing kit will still work, however there may be difficulty getting the adhesive to bond with weathered timber. In this case you may need to pin timber components on with brads and screw fix aluminium components.
Q: Is the sequence of installation important?
A: Yes. PLEASE WATCH ALL OF THE INSTALLATION VIDEOS so that you fully understand how to install.
- For BOTH sill and butt kits, fit the draught dodgers to the perimeter of the door, then the EMV to the centre.
- For sill kits where the door opens inward, fit a compressive seal to the edge of the sill threshold and fit RP5 to the bottom inside.
- For sill kits where the doors open outward, fit RP5 to the bottom outside of the door.
- For butt kits fit sections of draught dodgers with the brush to the inside bottom of the door.
Q: Do I have to use the fitting packer?
A: Yes! The fitting packers have been provided to ensure the draught dodgers are fitted at exactly the right distance from the face of the door. Not using the fitting packer also guarantees an inferior result.
Q: Once stuck in place, will I still be able to peel off the self adhesive components?
A: Unfortunately, no. Once they are on, they are on! So please do not rush - make sure you have plenty of time to WATCH THE INSTALLATION VIDEOS and prepare carefully.
Q: My doors are outward opening with a Sill Threshold (it looks like Type A in your diagram). Can I install the bottom treatment for the doors on the inside?
A: No. That will make them impossible (or at least very difficult) to open. The bottom treatment must go on the outside of the doors.
Q: The centre of my door is quite rough and the EMV doesn’t stick to it. What can I do?
A: The EMV will only stick to a smooth surface. If the centre of your door has a rough surface, then either sand it and paint it or get some “mirror mounting tape” and fit that first. The “mirror mounting tape” is slightly conformable around the bumps and the EMV will bond to the other side of the tape. Note that this will require a larger size gap to accommodate both the mirror mounting tape and the EMV.
Q: One of my doors is warped and no longer aligns with the other door. What can I do?
A: The main issue is usually at the head (top) of the jam where the door misalignment is typically the greatest. In this case, cut the draught dodger for the head of the jam at the centre join. Fit the draught dodger for the active door using the fitting packer in the usual way (refer to video instructions under the “How To” tab). When fitting the draught dodger for the inactive door, use the fitting packer at the hinge side and then gradually fit the draught dodger a little closer to the inactive door (it will be held firm by a bolt) to minimise the misalignment at the centre. Note that the seal on the inactive door will be more compressed than usual.
Q: What if I have extra tall french doors? Will this fit work for me?
A: The draught dodgers will fit regular tall doors which are normally 2350mm in height. If you have taller doors than this, you will need to join the side draught dodgers to make up the height. Usually off cuts from the head (top of the door) will be sufficient to do that.
Q: I'm wondering why the Draught Dodger component is not sticking to my joinery. It let go after a few days even though I cleaned the surface thoroughly.
A: The adhesive used in our Draught Dodgers range is potentially incompatible with some raw timber finishes that includes, but may not be limited to, Sikkens Cetol BLX-Pro. If the Draught Dodgers have come away from the surface, timber ones can be re-fixed with brads (small nails) and aluminum ones with screws to hold them in place. Please be sure to use the fitting packer to get the best performance out of your Draught Dodgers.
Q: Do you have a recommended installer for the French Door Draught Proofing Kit?
A: A recommended installer is highly location dependent. To find out if we have a recommended installer in your area please contact us here or call 1300 326 627.
Q: Can I get a sample?
A: Unfortunately, we do not have samples of the French Door Draught Proofing Kit.
Q: I did not watch the videos and have stuck the draught dodgers onto the door in the wrong place. Now I can’t put the seals in.
A: Unfortunately that is quite problematic. We do provide the videos to ensure you get a quality result. However, we can’t make you watch them. The Draught Dodgers can be removed from the door, but the self adhesive tape will not restick. You could nail or screw the Draught Dodgers on (in the correct place) using the fitting packer after you have watched the video.
Q: Are there any videos that will help me with installing?
A: All ecoMaster products have informative videos created by our Technical Director. These videos will provide you with easy step by step instructions to assist with your DIY Install. You can find this by clicking the tab “How To”.

Why is draught proofing my doors and windows so important?
Even small gaps around your doors and windows can let in cold draughts, hot air, noise, and dust—making your home less comfortable and more expensive to heat or cool. Sealing those gaps is one of the easiest ways to improve comfort and lower your energy bills.
Can’t I just go to a hardware store and buy a seal?
You can—but choosing from thousands of confusing options can be a frustrating guessing game. Get it wrong, and the door won’t close, or the seal won’t work. We’ve done the hard work for you with a curated range of high-quality, expert-tested products—so you get it right the first time.
Will sealing just a few doors or windows really make a difference?
Yes! Even fixing just one leaky door or window can noticeably improve the comfort of your home. You don’t have to do everything at once—just start with the worst offenders and build from there.
How do I know which product is right for my home?
That’s where we’ve made things simple. You can use our Find and Fix My Draughts tool to quickly identify the right products for your doors, windows, and gaps. Or explore our handy kits and guides tailored to different home types and draught problems—no guesswork needed!
Are these products DIY-friendly?
Absolutely. Most of our draught proofing solutions are designed for easy DIY installation, and we back them up with clear instructions and how-to videos. If you'd rather not DIY, contact us and we’re happy to refer you to a trusted draught proofing technician in your area.
